Rota Loo 650
Batch Composting Toilet
$4,580.00
The Rota Loo 650 is a waterless, batch composting toilet system designed for small families or holiday homes. The Rota Loo is a very unique composting toilet that features a special external composting unit installed under the toilet floor level.
The Rota Loo 650 accommodates up to 4 full-time toilet users. If only used part-time, the Rota Loo 650 can accommodate up to 8 people using the system.
The under-the-floor composting unit features a rotation mechanism inside with 6 separate composting bins. When one of the composting bins fills up (after 2-3 months of full-time use), the inside mechanism is rotated so that the next empty bin is put into use. By the time all 6 composting bins have filled up, the first one is ready with composting process and can be emptied for example in garden.

Rota Loo 650
The Rota-Loo 650 offers a revolutionary approach to waterless toilet maintenance, perfect for locations where traditional septic systems are impractical. This odorless, chemical-free, and eco-friendly batch composting system is designed for easy installation and minimal maintenance, making it an ideal choice for environmentally sensitive areas near waterways or off-grid locations.
Why Choose Rota-Loo 650?
- Space-Saving Design: Compact and perfect for holiday homes or residences with limited space.
- Capacity: Supports up to 4 full-time users or 8 part-time users.
- Complete Package: Includes six composting bins, filters, ventilation components, a waste chute, and a wind turbine, ensuring you have everything you need for setup and operation.
- Eco-Friendly: Turns human waste into nutrient-rich compost, promoting sustainable living.
For higher capacity needs, consider the larger Rota-Loo 950 model.
How Does the Rota-Loo Work?
The Rota-Loo operates like a rotating clock with multiple bins. Here’s how it works:
- Start with Bin 1 at directly below the porcelain toilet: Fill the bin over 2–3 months of use.
- Rotate the Bins: When a bin is full, rotate the system clockwise to position the next empty bin below the toilet.
- Composting Cycle: By the time the bin #1 cycles back to starting position (e.g. 12 months later), its contents have decomposed into rich, garden-safe humus.
- Reuse: Empty the composted material, reset the bin, and continue the cycle.
This batch composting method ensures a mess-free, hassle-free process with minimal handling.
Installation
The Rota-Loo 650 is a split-system composting toilet, where the toilet pedestal is installed directly above the composting unit, which is positioned below the bathroom or restroom floor level. The Rota-Loo 650 requires 26 inches of clear space below the floor level for proper installation.
Key Installation Steps:
- Site Preparation:
A flat, level base should be prepared to support the composting unit. The base must provide stable and secure support while being shielded from external elements. - Toilet Pedestal Placement:
The toilet pedestal is to be positioned directly above the composting unit to ensure vertical waste flow. The top part of the composting unit can be rotated so that the toilet pedestal and waste chute can be in any position relative to the emptying hatch (see photos). - Ventilation Setup:
Ventilation pipes and pods included in the package must be connected to the composting unit. As the unit does not have pre-made ventilation holes, the installation can be customized to fit different structures and layouts. - Service Access Planning:
Convenient access to the bins should be planned to facilitate rotation and servicing when needed. - Electricity Connection:
Power supply for the ventilation fan should be ensured, as proper airflow is essential for effective odor control and composting. For totally off-grid use, we highly recommend Solar Panel Fan and Whirlybird accessories. - Liquid Waste Management:
The liquid waste management system should be configured according to site requirements:- Option 1: Closed Setup
The liquid outlet is to be sealed with the included cap, allowing liquids to absorb into the compost mass or flow to the bottom of the unit, where they evaporate through the ventilation system. This option is suitable for warm climates with optimal evaporation conditions. - Option 2: Drainage Setup
Excess liquid can be directed through the outlet into a French drain or collected in a separate container or tank for disposal. This setup is recommended for locations with higher moisture levels or less evaporation potential.
- Option 1: Closed Setup
Maintenance
Maintaining the Rota-Loo 650 is simple and ensures the system remains clean and efficient. The primary maintenance task is bin rotation, followed by periodic bin emptying and preparation for reuse. Here’s how to handle these steps:
Bin Rotation
- How to Know When a Bin is Full:
A common question is how to determine when a bin needs rotation. To check, a torchlight should be used to visually inspect the compost through the toilet pedestal. Without a light, the compost is not visible, which reassures users who may be concerned about seeing waste. If the compost is approaching the waste chute, the bin is full and ready for rotation. - Rotating the System:
When a bin fills, the system should be rotated so that the next empty bin is positioned directly beneath the toilet.- If the system has already completed a full cycle, inspect the bin closest to the empty hatch. If this bin is fully composted, it should be removed for emptying.
Bin Emptying and Preparation
- Emptying the Bin:
Once a bin is removed, the compost inside should be safely emptied. Compost at this stage is typically nutrient-rich and safe to use for non-edible plants and trees. - Preparing the Bin for Reuse:
After emptying, the bin should be prepared for its next use:- Jute Liner: Place a jute liner at the bottom of the bin. This liner prevents small holes in the bin from becoming blocked by solid waste.
- Organic Material: Add a thin layer (approximately 1 inch) of dry organic material, such as sawdust, wood shavings, or dry leaves. This layer aids in starting the composting process.
- Recording Servicing:
Keep a record of the servicing date to monitor when the system was last maintained. This helps ensure that maintenance tasks are performed consistently and at appropriate intervals.
