Green Toilet Lux 120

The Green Toilet Lux is an innovative composting toilet designed for indoor use, featuring a stylish porcelain pedestal. Sometimes called the porcelain composting toilet. This makes it an aesthetically pleasing and functional choice for seasonal-use holiday homes, cabins, tiny houses as well as for year-round residences. It offers a user-friendly experience, mirroring the familiar comfort and convenience of normal flush toilets, thereby eliminating the need for special how-to-use instructions.

There are two basic models of the Green Toilet Lux composting toilets. The smaller Green Toilet Lux 120 is called "the family model" due to it's intended 2-4 people user capacity. There is also a larger Green Toilet Lux 330 available for full-time, year-around residences, larger families and public use cases.

The great thing about the Green Toilet Lux 120 composting toilet is that it is a split-system, batch composting toilet. Find the video above and read description to learn more!

How the Green Toilet Lux works

As the waste falls down into the composting container below floor level, all solids (poop and toilet paper) will land on a double base layer inside the Green Toilet container. Most of the urine will get absorbed into the solids and evaporate through the ventilation of the container by time.

However, if there is more urine (or other liquid) falling into the composting container, it passes through the solids and the double base onto the bottom of the Green Toilet container.

This double base design efficiently separates surplus liquid (urine) from solid waste, initiating the composting process right from the start. While majority of the urine gets absorbed into the compost mass, the excess will fall through the double base to the bottom of the container. From there, the excess urine can be lead to a canister or a special filter with a hose supplied in the package.

The double base design is essential for the odorless operation and effective composting process of the toilet. This way there is no need to separate the urine in the toilet seat (a.k.a. urine-diverting toilets), like in many other waterless toilets on the market.

Green Toilet Double Base

Benefits of Composting in Batches

The GT Lux 120 comes with two 120-liter (approx. 31-gallon) special composting containers that separate liquid from the solid compost mass within the composting containers. Of the two composting containers, one is intended to be in use while the other is finishing composting outside.

When one Green Toilet composting container fills up, the second container can be put into use immediately to enable continuous use of the toilet. By the time the second container has also filled up, the first one should ready with composting process and can be emptied for example into a garden. This principle of switching composting containers is called batch composting and therefore the Green Toilet belongs to the category of batch composting toilets.

The great thing about batch composting and spare containers is that they enable extended capacity if needed. Quite often it is difficult to estimate precisely how much composting capacity (volume) is needed to manage waste of X number of persons before few years of use history. Batch composting toilets offer flexibility in this as more composting containers can be acquired when and if needed.

You can find extra Green Toilet 120 composting containers for your Green Toilet Lux 120 composting toilets separately from us. Please note that any new Green Toilet Lux 120 composting toilet packages come with two composting containers so you will at least have one spare container with the basic package.

The Green Toilet Lux composting toilets fall in to the category of split-system composting toilets, meaning there is an external composting container underneath the toilet floor level. In the case of the Green Toilet Lux 120 the minimum space requirement under the floor level is 28 inches.

The system is therefore installed in two levels. Inside, there is a porcelain toilet that is connected to the composting container below the bathroom floor-level. The composting container has to be vertically directly below the porcelain toilet, so that waste naturally drop straight into the composting container.

In addition, there is ventilation from the composting container, powered by a low-consumption electric fan. The ventilation ensures that there is constant under pressure from the composting container out to the sky. The composting container gets it’s replacement air from the side of the composting container through tiny holes. If electricity is not available, we recommend our Solar Power Bank Kit and Whirlybird as accessories for your Green Toilet Lux composting toilet system.

The composting toilet container under floor is the Green Toilet composting toilet container designed and made in Finland, Scandinavia.

There are a number of advantages to split-system composting toilets:

  • Generally, split-systems like the Green Toilet Lux have greater user capacity and therefore longer service intervals. In other words, the toilet needs to be serviced less often.
  • For split-system composting toilets we offer a sleek and shiny porcelain-made dry toilet pedestal that looks and feels just like the conventional toilet.
  • Split-systems also have the advantage that the bathroom usually stays intact during the service of the toilet

We offer several composting toilets with the split-system structure. To find out the clearance needed, please refer to this chart of split models.

Use of the GT Lux

The Green Toilet Lux is used just like a normal flush toilet, except that it is not flushed. You sit down on the toilet and do your thing just like you normally would do. Male users may also urinate standing if desired.

All waste, including urine and toilet papers, simply fall through a waste pipe connecting the toilet into the composting container below floor level.

There is no smell whatsoever coming out from the toilet. The composting container below the floor level separates liquid from solid waste creating optimal conditions for natural composting process resulting in no smell. In addition, the system has effective ventilation to ensure there is no smell coming from the toilet.

After using the toilet, a tiny bit of dry organic material like hemp or peat moss is added after every time you have done your #2. Alternatively, dry material can be added separately 1-2 times a week a larger amount, about 1-2 gallons.

Cleaning the toilet pedestal

The porcelain pedestal can be washed with little water, a toilet brush and biodegradable detergent, if needed for example once per week. Please note that usually the porcelain pedestal stays clean by itself after use. Rarely there are any marks of use after using the toilet.

Servicing the Green Toilet

The Green Toilet Lux operates on a batch composting principle, meaning there is a swap made to a spare container once the current composting container one is full. The full container is sealed with a closed lid and set aside outside for further composting process. While idling, the compost will mature into rich, nutritious mulch over 6 to 12 months, depending on environmental factors.

For convenience, the Green Toilet containers are designed with wheels, making them simple to transport and manage.

When the Green Toilet composting container becomes full, the other empty container is taken into use.

GT Switch GIF

Liquids management

Generally majority of urine will get absorbed into the compost mass inside the Green Toilet and evaporate from there through the ventilation.

However, if there is more urine (or other liquids e.g. after washing the toilet pedestal with water) it passes thought the double base onto the bottom of the Green Toilet container. From there the so-called excess liquids are usually collected into a 5-gallon canister.

We recommend to regularly check the canister to see the level of liquids in it. When the canister fills up, it can be emptied for example into the other spare composting container (assuming it is full of compost). Alternatively, assuming there are no nearby water areas right next to, the excess liquids can be spread around from non-edible plants that can reuse the nutrients as fertilizer.

Please note that any liquids should not be directly poured in ground if there are nearby water areas (lakes, ponds, rivers etc.) or high water levels that could damage from the excess liquids.

I recently installed a family 120. Works well so far. I was planning a split system that I didn't think was manufactured and found this shop and it fit perfectly! Hallelujah! Saved me a bunch of time. I added an extra air tube in the corners from a section of drain pipe with the holes to help keep the compost aerobic.

Composting toilet for off-grid cabin works well! After a great deal of research, I decided on the Green Toilet Lux 120 Composting toilet for my off grid cabin. The fact that I could install a replaceable bin under the cabin's "in-house" toilet area was fantastic. The porcelain toilet is a perfect amenity - although I had to find a toilet seat to replace the one that was sent (cracked in shipping - but WTS reimbursed me to cover the costs). A rubber boot on the roof helps to keep rain out of the structure. The wind-driven fan works really well and helps keep the area ventilated. I keep a bucket full of wood mulch in the toilet area and drop 1 to 3 scoops after each use. I found some biodegradable detergent from Dr. Bronners that I mixed with water to spray down the toilet for cleaning at the end of our weekend visit. I also upgraded the provided vent pipe to a 4" pipe. Having a usable composting toilet in the winter makes our cabin so much more habitable. Thanks for making this product availalbe!

Easy set up and GREAT customer service! The Green Lux toilet arrived and was very easy to set up. We built an elevated outhouse to make storage of the containers easy. We hosted a large gathering of 100+ people, and had several tell us that it was the most luxurious outhouse they have ever been in! Also, when the fan went out and the seat got cracked, they didn’t even ask questions, and simply sent us new ones! We will 100% be returning customers!

Arrived quick! The seat itself (not the pedestal which seems the more likely) was cracked on arrival. It was a bummer but the customer service is on point, sent not one but TWO replacements because the first redo was cracked too! Crazy. Anyway.. Gorgeous throne, 5/5 will poop again.

Great product and easy installation. Having dimensions online would help out, but other than that seriously stoked on it!

CF 8 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 8 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 250-gallon container. Like the CF 4, it is designed for gradual emptying rather than batch-style use. Solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 8 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container.

Because the CF 8 is more than twice as large as the CF 4, each pile can hold approximately 480–960 poops, depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~17–32 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~8–16 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~5–11 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~3–5 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~1.2–2.6 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one-third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 8 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.

Full-tank capacity estimate: ~1,440–2,880 poops

Example: 120 days of use (approx. 4 months):
→ ~12–24 solid visits per day on average

⚠️ Disclaimer

These numbers are rough estimates based on typical use and conditions. Actual capacity will vary depending on:

For best performance, ensure proper aeration, regular bulking material use, and consistent emptying of composted portions.

💡 Want to Maximize Capacity? Consider a Urine-Diverting Toilet — With Some Important Considerations

upgrade to a urine diverting toilet pedestal

If you’re looking to maximize the capacity of the CF 8 system — aiming for 960+ poops per composting “pile” — we recommend using a urine-diverting (UD) toilet pedestal.

✅ Benefits of Urine Separation:

By diverting urine out of the solids container, the volume taken up by absorbent material (like peat or wood shavings) is significantly reduced. This can make a big difference in how often the system needs to be emptied.

⚠️ Downsides to Consider:

Urine-diverting toilets can take some time to get used to. Users need to sit or aim correctly to ensure proper separation, which might not happen consistently without experience or guidance.

For this reason, UD toilets are generally not ideal for public or commercial settings where the toilet is used by guests, tourists, or other first-time users. In these cases, misuse can reduce the effectiveness of the system and may even lead to unpleasant maintenance issues.

In short: A UD toilet is an excellent choice for maximizing capacity in private or family use, but for guest or public access composting toilets, a standard non-diverting model may be more practical and user-friendly.

Green Toilet 100 Easy – Estimated Daily Capacity

The Green Toilet 100 Easy is a compact and user-friendly batch composting toilet with a 26-gallon composting container. Its design makes it well-suited for outhouses, cabins, and even indoor use. A spare container is available to expand capacity and simplify servicing.

🔢 Estimated Solid-Waste Capacity per Bin:

Note: Due to the shape and internal structure of the container, the actual composting capacity is slightly lower than its raw volume might suggest, if you compare with Green Toilet 120 Family composting toilet for example.

📆 Average Daily Capacity per Bin

Service Interval Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~6–7 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~3–4 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~2.2 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~1.1 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~0.5 visits/day

CF 4 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 4 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 105-gallon container. Unlike batch composting systems (such as the Green Toilet models), the CF 4 is designed for gradual emptying — solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 4 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container. Depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used, each pile can hold approximately 200–400 poops.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~7–13 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~3–7 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~2–4 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~1–2 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~0.5–1.1 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 4 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.
