CF 8

The CF 8 expands the possibilities of continuous composting systems, specially designed for medium to high usage scenarios with a need for minimal underfloor clearance. This larger model distinguishes itself by offering:

  • Capacity for 6-12 Users: It's engineered to accommodate 6 full-time or up to 12 part-time users, efficiently managing approximately 22 daily visits.
  • Low Underfloor Clearance Requirement: With only 17.7 inches of underfloor clearance needed when partially buried, it fits seamlessly into various installation environments.
  • Effortless Maintenance: Featuring a single composting bin design, the system simplifies waste management by negating the need for container exchanges.
  • Substantial Composting Volume: Boasts a high 950-liter (250-gallon) capacity, significantly reducing organic waste volume by up to 80% through its efficient composting process.

Operating on a single-container continuous composting principle, the CF 8 ensures organic material is constantly decomposed, making room for new waste while allowing for the easy removal of composted material from the front. The system comes equipped with all necessary components for installation, including a composting container, drainage floor, and a waste chute, among others. An innovative feature is the option to connect a second toilet pedestal, enhancing its adaptability to different usage requirements.

What is a continuous composting toilet?

A continuous composting toilet is a type of eco-friendly toilet that processes waste through ongoing composting within a single container. Unlike batch systems, which require swapping out full containers for empty ones, a continuous system adds new waste on top while older waste decomposes at the bottom. This design allows for the removal of composted material from one end (usually the bottom or backs) while fresh waste is added from the top or front. Continuous composting toilets manage moisture, ventilate to prevent odors, and often include features to separate liquid and solid waste, enhancing the composting efficiency and making the system suitable for continuous use without the need for frequent emptying.

Usage

The CF composting toilet is used just as regular toilets, except that the CF is not flushed. All waste including toilet paper goes down through the toilet to the below-floor composting unit. Thanks to darkness inside the compost unit, there is no clear visibility to the waste from above.

The CF composting toilets do not smell thanks to two distinguishing features: separation of liquid and efficient ventilation.

Within the CF composting unit, there is a false floor that captures all solid waste. Most of the liquid will also get absorbed into the solid compost and evaporate through the ventilation of the system to the sky. The solids’ ability to absorb the liquid depends on the climate, how much solids waste there is in the composting unit and how dry the compost is. Generally, the dehydration of liquid waste is greater in warmer climate.

If the amount of urine exceeds what the solid material can absorb, the excess liquid passes through the false floor and collects at the bottom of the unit. From there, it is drained through a pipe and can either be directed to a separate tank or a trench, depending on local regulations. The separation of liquid is very important in keeping the composting toilet odorless.

Efficient ventilation, powered by electric fan, ensures that the composting container is underpressured at all times drawing air constantly out to the sky. The ventilation secures that there will be no smell coming out from the toilet even if the moisture balance within the under-floor composting unit is not optimal at all times (e.g. there is a peak in the use of the toilet cause by guests). If electricity is not available, we recommend our Solar Power Bank Kit and Whirlybird as accessories for your off-grid composting toilet system.

For improved compost quality, we highly recommend adding organic bulking agent such as animal hemp bedding or peat into the compost tiny amount (a cup) after every use or once a week a greater amount.

Installation

CF composting toilets are continuous composting toilets, meaning there is a single composting unit installed underneath the toilet floor level where all the “magic” happens – that is organic breakdown of matter through natural composting process resulting in a reusable humus / compost.

The below floor black composting unit is connected to the floor level toilet pedestal with a waste shaft included in the package.

CF continuous composting toilet installation image

The CF composting container can be installed either completely on ground level or buried half in to ground. Burying is a great option for spaces with limited height clearance under the toilet floor. *Half-buried, the CF 8 only requires 18 inches of underfloor clearance. If the container can not be buried, the height requirement is 36 inches.

Service and maintenance

As with all toilets, there is a certain amount of maintenance involved with the CF composting toilets. Essentially the service of the CF toilet is about shoveling space for the fresh waste and emptying ready composted humus/mulch out of the system. A lot depending on the number of users, climate and other conditions, we recommend servicing the system every 6 months assuming 3-4 people use the toilet daily (average of 16 daily visits).

Explaining the CF

Derived from Latin, “Cultus” refers to a toilet, while “Fulcrum” signifies a single point – indicating a toilet designed with a solitary chamber. Alternatively, “Cultus” can represent culture or society, and “Fulcrum,” a pivotal moment. This dual meaning underscores our contribution at Waterless Toilet Shop to support societal progress during times of transformation.

cf brothers

Two Sizes: CF 4 and CF 8

We offer two models of CF composting toilets: the smaller CF 4 and the larger CF 8.

Both models share the same features, with the main difference being their capacity.

The CF 4 has an approximate volume of 105 gallons, making it suitable for 1-4 users. It’s an excellent choice for weekenders, tiny homes, small cabins, or limited residential use. The CF 4 is ideal for smaller spaces where a low-profile solution is needed.

The CF 8, with a volume of around 250 gallons, can accommodate up to 6 full-time users or 12 part-time users. This larger model is also suitable for public spaces, with an estimated capacity of 24 visits (only solid waste is counted, as urine is separated and does not impact the composting unit’s volume).

continuous composting toilet CF 8 composting toilet false floor

Separation of liquid

One of the most important features of the CF continuous composting toilets is the false floor within the composting unit. All waste lands on the false floor. Most of the urine will get absorbed into the solid compost and evaporate through the ventilation of the composting unit.

If the amount of urine exceeds what the solid material can absorb, the excess liquid passes through the false floor and collects at the bottom of the unit. From there, it is drained through a pipe and can either be directed to a separate tank or a trench, depending on local regulations.

One of the key features of any composting toilet is effective separation of liquids from solids. With proper separation, the composting process works efficiently, ensuring that solid waste stays at the ideal moisture level for natural decomposition. This prevents the production of ammonia and helps maintain a pleasant, odor-free environment—addressing one of the main concerns people often have.

continuous composting toilet CF 8 is emptied through hatch

Emptied through hatch

The CF composting toilets are emptied gradually through a hatch on one end of the composting unit. The emptying is done using a shovel or digging fork. The CF composting toilet are continuous composting toilets which means that the composting unit is not intended to be emptied all at once, unless the toilet has been out of use for months.

The CF composting toilets handle waste through an ongoing composting process in a single container. Unlike batch systems, where full containers are replaced with empty ones, continuous systems allow new waste to be added on top while the older waste composts at the bottom. This design makes it easy to remove the finished compost from one end as fresh waste falls in to the front.

CF 8-continuous-composting-toilet-installation-principle-partially-buried

Option to partially bury

The CF composting units can be partially buried below ground level, reducing the amount of clear space needed beneath the bathroom floor. The ability to bury the unit depends on the local ground conditions. When half-buried, the CF 8 requires only 18 inches of underfloor clearance. If burying the unit isn’t possible, the height requirement increases to 36 inches.

can connect two pedestals into single cf 8 composting toilet

Combining Two Toilet Pedestals with the CF 8 Unit

The CF 8 composting system allows you to connect two toilet pedestals to a single composting unit. The pedestals can be installed in any direction, as long as the dividing wall fits in between the compartments.

This setup is particularly beneficial for small to medium-sized commercial or public restroom facilities, offering a practical solution for accommodating separate spaces for both sexes.

upgrade to a urine diverting pedestal

Option: Upgrade to Urine-Separating Porcelain Pedestal

By default, all our split-system composting toilets, including the CF 8, come with a high-quality non-separating porcelain pedestal. For those who prefer, we offer the option to upgrade to a urine-diverting porcelain pedestal. This design separates urine from solids at the the toilet seat, reducing odors and need for additional bulking agents.

recommended accessories for off-grid installation

No Electricity? No Problem!

If electricity is not available, we recommend our Solar Power Bank Kit and Whirlybird as accessories for your off-grid composting toilet system. The CF 8 composting toilet is equipped with a 12 V DC ventilation fan (AC adapter included), which can be powered by the Solar Power Bank Kit for up to 24 hours without sunlight. In addition, the wind-driven Whirlybird ventilator provides effective ventilation on cloudy/windy days.

I have a tiny home in Virginia that needed an upgraded bathroom. I spent a long time investigating composting toilets online and watched a lot of YouTube videos explaining how each works. I knew from experience that separating urine from solids was important for keeping the composting process odorless. The only toilet design that made sense for carefree emptying and separating was the Green Loo. Also, I didn't want a plastic toilet but an attractive ceramic one. I decided on a Green Loo CF-4 continuous composting system. But how to get it to the East Coast? I decided it was worth paying several hundred dollars in shipping to get the Green Loo, which is only sold in the U.S. in Nevada, to the East Coast. The toilet arrived on a huge truck that wasn’t willing to come down my dirt road and driveway, so a neighbor ended up picking the box up at the main road in his front end loader and dropping in my yard. I had a builder install it and, and despite some cussing and finessing, he got it hooked up and working in a day; some small parts (bolts and such) had been lost through a hole in the shipping box. (It wasn’t packed well for long-distance shipping). I am very pleased with the quality of the toilet, and the split system’s heavy duty plastic tank under the floor is sturdy and well made. I could tell it had been banged around a lot in shipping and aside from a few scratches it had arrived unscathed. I used the Green Loo for a month without the fan to see if I needed it. The system worked in the sub-freezing weather; however, there was a slight odor, so I had the builder hook up the fan that came with it. Now it’s totally odor free. I plan to get the solar panel to run the fan, which is very quiet. The unit comes with a bag of Bokashi, and I ordered more Bokashi on Amazon to jump-start composting. I am using peat moss as a composting medium, but plan to switch to the more sustainably harvested coco coir. The CF-4 model is an excellent product.

Enjoying the ease of care and maintenance for our composting toilet. Highly recommend the water faucet to clean the bowl after use. Ours was a smaller chamber because it a new build in a concrete slab so we used the slope of the land to enable the chamber to sit beneath the pedestal. Very happy. We have two. One in the main house and exactly the same model in our cabin.

Being fully off grid and on a site with a very high water table, conventional septic tank options are not appropriate for our site, and a high energy consuming aerobic system is out of the question. This installation is a stand alone facility we call the TajMaLoo and will be a trial run for including a Green Loo CF4 in our future container house project.

I recently installed a family 120. Works well so far. I was planning a split system that I didn't think was manufactured and found this shop and it fit perfectly! Hallelujah! Saved me a bunch of time. I added an extra air tube in the corners from a section of drain pipe with the holes to help keep the compost aerobic.

CF 8 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 8 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 250-gallon container. Like the CF 4, it is designed for gradual emptying rather than batch-style use. Solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 8 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container.

Because the CF 8 is more than twice as large as the CF 4, each pile can hold approximately 480–960 poops, depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~17–32 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~8–16 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~5–11 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~3–5 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~1.2–2.6 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one-third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 8 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.

Full-tank capacity estimate: ~1,440–2,880 poops

Example: 120 days of use (approx. 4 months):
→ ~12–24 solid visits per day on average

⚠️ Disclaimer

These numbers are rough estimates based on typical use and conditions. Actual capacity will vary depending on:

For best performance, ensure proper aeration, regular bulking material use, and consistent emptying of composted portions.

💡 Want to Maximize Capacity? Consider a Urine-Diverting Toilet — With Some Important Considerations

upgrade to a urine diverting toilet pedestal

If you’re looking to maximize the capacity of the CF 8 system — aiming for 960+ poops per composting “pile” — we recommend using a urine-diverting (UD) toilet pedestal.

✅ Benefits of Urine Separation:

By diverting urine out of the solids container, the volume taken up by absorbent material (like peat or wood shavings) is significantly reduced. This can make a big difference in how often the system needs to be emptied.

⚠️ Downsides to Consider:

Urine-diverting toilets can take some time to get used to. Users need to sit or aim correctly to ensure proper separation, which might not happen consistently without experience or guidance.

For this reason, UD toilets are generally not ideal for public or commercial settings where the toilet is used by guests, tourists, or other first-time users. In these cases, misuse can reduce the effectiveness of the system and may even lead to unpleasant maintenance issues.

In short: A UD toilet is an excellent choice for maximizing capacity in private or family use, but for guest or public access composting toilets, a standard non-diverting model may be more practical and user-friendly.

Green Toilet 100 Easy – Estimated Daily Capacity

The Green Toilet 100 Easy is a compact and user-friendly batch composting toilet with a 26-gallon composting container. Its design makes it well-suited for outhouses, cabins, and even indoor use. A spare container is available to expand capacity and simplify servicing.

🔢 Estimated Solid-Waste Capacity per Bin:

Note: Due to the shape and internal structure of the container, the actual composting capacity is slightly lower than its raw volume might suggest, if you compare with Green Toilet 120 Family composting toilet for example.

📆 Average Daily Capacity per Bin

Service Interval Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~6–7 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~3–4 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~2.2 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~1.1 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~0.5 visits/day

CF 4 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 4 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 105-gallon container. Unlike batch composting systems (such as the Green Toilet models), the CF 4 is designed for gradual emptying — solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 4 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container. Depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used, each pile can hold approximately 200–400 poops.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~7–13 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~3–7 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~2–4 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~1–2 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~0.5–1.1 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 4 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.

If you’re looking to maximize the capacity of the CF 4 system — aiming for 400+ poops per composting “pile” — we recommend using a urine-diverting (UD) toilet pedestal.

✅ Benefits of Urine Separation:

By diverting urine out of the solids container, the volume taken up by absorbent material (like peat or wood shavings) is significantly reduced. This can make a noticeable difference in how often the system needs to be emptied.

⚠️ Downsides to Consider:

In short: A UD toilet is an excellent choice for maximizing capacity in private or family use, but for guest or public access composting toilets, a standard non-diverting model may be more practical and user-friendly.

Green Toilet 120 Family

💩 Average Daily Capacity per 31-Gallon Composting Bin

(Based on approx. 356 uses involving a #2 — i.e., poop) – only the solids count!

Service Interval #2 Visits per Day (involving a #2)
30 days (1 month) ~11.9 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~5.9 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~4.0 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~2.0 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~1.0 visits/day

🟢 What counts as a “#2 visit”?
Only visits that involve pooping (i.e., going number two) — urine-only visits don’t contribute to filling the composting bin and are not included in the estimate.

⚠️ Disclaimer:
These estimates are approximations. The actual number of solid uses per bin may vary significantly depending on climate, temperature, ventilation, user habits, and the amount of dry bulking material (e.g., wood shavings or peat) added after each use.

Green Toilet 330

💩 Average Daily Capacity per 87-Gallon Composting Bin

(Based on approx. 1,000 uses involving a #2 — i.e., poop) – only the solids count!

Service Interval #2 Visits per Day (involving pooping)
30 days (1 month) ~33 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~17 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~11 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~5.6 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~2.7 visits/day

🟢 What counts as a “#2 visit”?
Only visits that involve defecation (pooping) — urine-only visits don’t fill up the composting bin and are not included in the 1,000-use estimate.

⚠️ Disclaimer:
These estimates are based on typical, steady use. The actual number of solid uses a composting bin can handle may vary significantly depending on climate, temperature, humidity, ventilation, and how much dry bulking material (like wood shavings) is added after each use.
