Green Toilet 330 Package with Spare container

The Green Toilet 330 composting toilet system is a highly unique and versatile composting toilet system for onsite, off-the-grid use without any water or electricity.

The Green Toilet 330 composting toilet consists of two very special composting toilet containers. The these containers are used one at a time underneath the toilet so that all toilet waste simply falls into the Green Toilet container. Inside the container, there is a special double base that separates excess urine from solid toilet waste - that is the urine that the compost could not naturally absorb and evaporate through the ventilation of the system. This feature of separating excess liquids from the solid waste is crucial in keeping the composting toilet odor-free. Learn more about urine separation from our blog.

When the Green Toilet composting toilet container fills up of solid waste (after months of full-time everyday use), the full container is replaced with the empty spare container included in the package. While the other container is in use, the other is set aside outdoors to undergo further composting process. By the time the second container has also filled up, the first container should already be done with the composting process - and again the container switch place. This method of composting in multiple containers is called batch composting. Find our entire selection of batch composting toilet here.

There are several advantages with composting in batches. First of all, it makes the service of the composting toilet really easy and quick. There is no need to work hands-on with raw toilet waste. All you got to do is simply pull out the full container of use, seal it with a closed lid and set it aside to finish composting process. Secondly, the capacity of the composting toilet can be extended for full-time everyday use of a large family or for public / commercial use with additional spare containers available separately. For example, in public restroom use it is not uncommon to have 3-4 Green Toilet 330 composting containers per restroom space.

The history of the Green Toilet dates back to early 90´s. The system has long proven use history both in private and public use in all continents.

The Green Toilets are designed and manufactured in Finland, distributed by Waterless Toilet Shop in the United States.

Learn more about the Green Toilet system by clicking the other tabs on the yellow section of the page.

Batch composting system

The Green Toilet is a batch composting toilet system meaning that the system comes with at least two composting containers. When the Green Toilet composting toilet’s container reaches capacity with solid waste after 6-12 months of continuous daily use, it is swapped out for the empty spare container provided in the package. While the other container is in use, the full one is placed outdoors to complete the composting process. By the time the second container is filled, the first one should be fully composted and ready for emptying. This cycle of alternating between containers is known as batch composting.

Off-the-Grid

The Green Toilet composting toilet system does not require any water or electricity. Therefore, the system is a totally off the grid, onsite sanitation solution.

With that said, the Green Toilet composting toilet can be kept clean with a regular toilet brush and a water bottle if desired. In addition, when there is electricity available, the system can be equipped with a electric duct fan to boost the ventilation of the system. The electric fan is recommended especially for indoor installations and for public/commercial use when there are lot of people using the composting toilet.

Odor-free

The Green Toilet composting toilet is totally free of odor. The system separates liquid urine from solid waste which is essential in keeping any waterless composting toilet odor-free. In addition, the Green Toilet features a ventilation of the composting container to secure odor-free operation.

Eco-friendly

The Green Toilet is the most eco-friendly composting toilet. The system preserves all the valuable nutrients, including phosphorus and nitrogen, that are essential for plants and trees to grow. Yet, the system also prevents those nutrients from getting into any water bodies, such as lakes, pond or rivers, where they would cause eutrophication – a common issue with traditional septic systems. Read for example how Composting Toilets are Rescuing Cape Cod Environment in Massachusetts.

Unlimited Capacity

Because the Green Toilet is a batch composting toilet operated with multiple composting containers, the capacity of the system can easily be extended without limits using additional spare containers. For example in public use composting toilets, it is common to utilize several spare containers to fit the use of 15-50 people using the toilet(s) each day.

Reliable & Durable

The Green Toilet is a sophisticated composting toilet system, yet there are hardly any moving parts that could easily break in use. This makes the system very robust and reliable. No toilet user can break the Green Toilet unintentionally just by using it. Thus, whether you are looking to use the Green Toilet privately at a holiday cabin or for public use, you can rely that the system works no matter the situation.

Long Service Intervals

The Green Toilet 330 composting containers are sizable. The volume of a single container is about 87 gallons (330 liters). Thus, in family use of 4 people, it will take about 6-12 months to fill up one container of solid waste. Hence, the system requires maintenance only one or two times a year, depending on the use.

Cost Effective Solution

The Green Toilet stands out as a highly cost-effective solution compared to other onsite wastewater treatment systems. Its price is only a fraction of what a traditional septic system would require. In most situations, installation is straightforward and can be done without hiring a professional. Additionally, the ongoing operational costs of the Green Toilet are extremely low.

When the Green Toilet is in use, all waste, including toilet paper, simply falls into the Green Toilet composting container under the toilet. Inside the container, all solid waste land on a special double base layer near bottom of the container. Most of the liquid urine will also get absorbed into the solid waste and evaporate through the ventilation system by time.

However, if there is more urine going into the Green Toilet container than the solids can absorb, the double base at the bottom of the container passes them through tiny holes so that the excess liquid falls onto the bottom of the container.

The special double base features capillary pillars touching the liquids at the bottom of the container allowing some of the excess liquid to be absorbed back to the compost mass. Identical design is utilized with under watering flowerpots. This great feature of the Green Toilet speeds up the composting process while keeping the moisture balance ideal at all times: the mass inside the container should not be too wet or too dry.

If there is more liquid than the Green Toilet composting container can manage, there is an outlet for the excess to drain out at the bottom of the container from where it can be lead into a French drain or collected into a separate liquids container, depending what the local regulations and environment allows.

Double base design has multiple advantages

  • The double base keeps the toilet and compost odorless at all times. The compost does not smell even when servicing the toilet
  • As a lot of the liquids are absorbed into the compost mass and evaporate through ventilation, there is less liquid waste to deal with compared to the other urine-diverting waterless toilets on the market. Please note that most of the human waste is urine after all.
  • The double base layer automatically preserves optimal moisture balance within the composting container.

Ventilation system

Another key feature of the system is the ventilation. The Green Toilet composting containers connect to a ventilation pipe to direct airflow from the composting container outward. The purpose of using the ventilation is to prevent any odors from entering the toilet under all conditions. Additionally, the ventilation aids in the evaporation of liquid from the compost. The evaporation can be so effective in warm climate that the system does not output any liquid out from the bottom of the composting container. This is typical especially in warm summer months. Yet, the system can well be used throughout the year even in cold climate.

If the Green Toilet composting system is to be used indoors, we recommend equipping the ventilation with an electric fan. If there is no power available, consider the Whirlybird and/or the Solar Panel fan.

The Green Toilet composting toilet should be used like any regular toilet except for the flush. Typically, the Green Toilet is installed underneath a flat, bench-like toilet seat for example in an outhouse. However, the Green Toilet can also be used with a ceramic toilet pedestal (have a look at the Green Toilet Lux model of the product)

When your done with your business, you can throw regular toilet paper into the Green Toilet composting toilet. Toilet paper will compost along the other waste. It is not absolutely necessary, but we do recommend adding some dry organic bulking material (such as hemp shavings) from time to time into the composting container through the toilet to improve the composting process and compost quality.

The Green Toilet is fully waterless composting toilet system, which means that there is no water to flush the waste down. With that said, the composting container and in particular the waste chute can be kept clean with water and toilet brush.

What happens after the composting container in use fills up

The operation and maintenance of the Green Toilet rely on batch composting. This means that once the composting container of the Green Toilet fills up, it is wheeled out, and an empty spare container is put in place. The filled container is then sealed with a lid and set aside to decompose until it’s time for the next servicing, eliminating the need for any direct contact with or shoveling of raw toilet waste.

By the time the second container has also filled up (after 6-12 months in family use), the first container should already be ready for emptying. If there are more toilet users, e.g. in public use, additional spare containers are available separately. The ready compost can be emptied for non-edible plants, trees or garden as fertilizer. This make the Green Toilet container the most ecological of all toilet types!

Service process in steps:

  1. Disconnect the ventilation pipe and liquids hose from the Green Toilet container,
  2. Pull the full container out using the wheels supplied,
  3. Seal the full container with the closed lid of the spare container,
  4. Leave the full container outside for further composting process and set the spare container in use.
  5. Repeat the process again when the other container is full again (after 6-12 months in family use).

Please note that the service process does not require any special tools!

Installation

The Green Toilet can be installed in many different applications. Probably the most common of those is in to a traditional outhouse where the Green Toilet is placed underneath a flat, bench-like seat. Click here to see photos of examples.

The Green Toilet composting container is positioned directly underneath the toilet. This setup allows waste to drop vertically into the container where it begins composting straight away.

Excess liquids flowing through the double base of the Green Toilet are collected via a hose that drains from the bottom of the container into a separate canister or French drain. This helps in keeping the system efficient and hygienic. Additionally, the top part of the Green Toilet container is equipped with a ventilation pipe. This pipe extends from the container and runs up the back wall of the outhouse or structure, exiting above the roof level. This ventilation setup is important as it helps to minimize odors, making the toilet always pleasant to use.

For maintenance, all service activities are conveniently conducted outside the structure. This external access ensures that the interior remains clean and in good condition. As a batch composting toilet, the Green Toilet comes with a spare container that are swapped in as needed. When one container fills up, it is replaced with an empty one, allowing continuous use. The full container is then left to compost further until the compost is ready to be utilized as fertilizer, for example in gardens.

Common Use Cases

The Green Toilet 330 is ideally suited for both holiday and permanent residences accommodating 4-6 individuals, offering extended service intervals compared to the smaller Green Toilet 120 Family model.

Furthermore, the Green Toilet 330 enjoys widespread use across public locations in numerous countries, including nature parks, tourist attractions, beaches, and marinas, particularly in areas lacking sewage infrastructure yet experiencing high foot traffic. FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Contact us: (702) 328 0689
Email: info@waterlesstoiletshop.com

1. Does the toilet smell?

No, the Green Toilet 330 is designed to remain odorless at all times. It features a double base design that effectively separates urine from solid waste. This separation ensures that liquid waste flows away, while solid waste remains on the top layer. This separation is crucial for the composting process and helps prevent any odors. Additionally, the toilet is equipped with an effective ventilation system that reinforces its ability to stay odorless at all times.

2. Can you install the Green Toilet indoors?

Yes, the Green Toilet can be installed indoors, but the installation depends on the building’s structure. For indoor installations, consider the Green Toilet Lux 330 model. The Lux 330 features a stylish porcelain pedestal installed directly above the Green Toilet container, which is positioned below floor level. If there is no such clearance below the floor-level, then it that case you might need to build a seat on top of the Green Toilet container. You may also consider some of the other composting toilets that can be installed more easily directly on floor level. See our Self-contained toilets.

3. Can you use the Green Toilet in a cold climate? What happens if it freezes?

Yes, the Green Toilet can be used in cold climates. While freezing temperatures will halt the composting process, this does not prevent the toilet from being used. The composting will naturally resume once temperatures rise, typically in the spring or summer. For regions where the climate remains very cold even in summer, it may be necessary to consider options such as extra capacity with spare containers, as the shortened composting period may require additional space. However, the toilet remains functional in freezing temperatures; the composting process will simply take longer to complete due to the cold.

Note: In places like Iceland, Green Toilets are used effectively in public toilets to serve tourists. These examples demonstrate the toilet’s robust performance, even in extremely cold conditions.

4. Should I choose the smaller Green Toilet 120 or the larger Green Toilet 330?

The best choice between the Green Toilet 120 and the Green Toilet 330 depends on your specific usage needs. The Green Toilet 120 is typically used by families for seasonal use, such as in a holiday home, tiny house, or cabin. It is well-suited for smaller families or less frequent usage.

On the other hand, the Green Toilet 330 is designed for larger families (five or more people) or for situations where the composting toilet is used more consistently throughout the year, not just seasonally. This model is often chosen for higher usage scenarios such as in public toilets or for year-round residential use.

Should the capacity ever run out, there is always the option to acquire additional spare containers. In the case of public use composting toilets it is not uncommon to see three or more spare containers to be used for a single toilet.

5. How many times can the  Green Toilet be used before service?

The manufacturer has run tests of Green Toilets in use and on average you can use them for the “number two” as follows:

  • Green Toilet 120 for about 250 times
  • Green Toilet 330 for about 800 times

Exact numbers vary depending on the climate and use case, but clearly the Green Toilets have high capacity and offer long service intervals.

6. What does the compost look like after it is emptied?

What does the compost look like after emptying

7. Where can I order the Green Toilet?

You can place an order for your Green Toilet through our online shop. Once your order is placed, the toilet will be delivered to your chosen delivery address. Delivery times vary depending on your location in the United States: typically, it takes 2 to 8 days. Orders from the West Coast may arrive faster due to our warehouse being located in Nevada. Deliveries to the East Coast generally take longer. After placing your order, you will receive a tracking number, allowing you to track your shipment every step of the way.

If you prefer not to use the web shop, you are always welcome to contact us by phone or email and the order can be processed manually.

The compost looks like this after it has been emptied from the Green Toilet

      Convenient Spare Container

The Green Toilet 330 includes a spare container, facilitating uninterrupted usage. As one container fills up, you can easily switch to the spare, allowing the full container to undergo further composting, such as in a garden, without any pause in toilet availability.

The picture is from a public use composting toilet in Scandinavia where they have multiple spare containers to accommodate hundreds of daily users.

Green Toilet 330 is spacious but not too big

      Spacious but not too big

The Green Toilet 330 has a great capacity even for public use. Hence the maintenance interval is reasonably long. On the other hand, the size of the Green Toilet is not too big so that it is effortless to be pulled out and moved around during maintenance.

Here at Tranquility Grange in Lincolnville Center, Maine, we were pleased at the promptness of delivery. Our guys quickly installed the Green Toilet, built a bench for it, and installed the container at the lower level of the building with a door to the exterior. We are now looking forward to extending our use of the Grange Hall into the cold weather after the pipes are drained.

The perfect solution After years of consideration, this composting toilet was the solution. Instead of adding expense and time for a pool side bathroom, we constructed an adorable outhouse with the Green Toilet in mind. Added a solar powered exhaust fan to make the trips as comfortable as possible. We enjoy the novelty of it all and the unit is very clean with no odors.

Happy you are in the US now! We purchased a Green Toilet last year, importing from Finland, and we are so pleased you have a store in the USA now. We have found the green toilet wonderful to use at our off grid island cottage. It is easy to use, and without odors one associates with an “outhouse”. It is easy to swap out the containers and this works very well for our purposes.

Customer service, communication and care are amazing!

CF 8 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 8 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 250-gallon container. Like the CF 4, it is designed for gradual emptying rather than batch-style use. Solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

      This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 8 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container.

Because the CF 8 is more than twice as large as the CF 4, each pile can hold approximately 480–960 poops, depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
      30 days (1 month) ~17–32 visits/day
      60 days (2 months) ~8–16 visits/day
      90 days (3 months) ~5–11 visits/day
      180 days (6 months) ~3–5 visits/day
      365 days (1 year) ~1.2–2.6 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one-third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 8 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.

      Full-tank capacity estimate: ~1,440–2,880 poops

Example: 120 days of use (approx. 4 months):
→ ~12–24 solid visits per day on average

      ⚠️ Disclaimer

These numbers are rough estimates based on typical use and conditions. Actual capacity will vary depending on:

For best performance, ensure proper aeration, regular bulking material use, and consistent emptying of composted portions.

💡 Want to Maximize Capacity? Consider a Urine-Diverting Toilet — With Some Important Considerations

upgrade to a urine diverting toilet pedestal

If you’re looking to maximize the capacity of the CF 8 system — aiming for 960+ poops per composting “pile” — we recommend using a urine-diverting (UD) toilet pedestal.

      ✅ Benefits of Urine Separation:

By diverting urine out of the solids container, the volume taken up by absorbent material (like peat or wood shavings) is significantly reduced. This can make a big difference in how often the system needs to be emptied.

      ⚠️ Downsides to Consider:

Urine-diverting toilets can take some time to get used to. Users need to sit or aim correctly to ensure proper separation, which might not happen consistently without experience or guidance.

For this reason, UD toilets are generally not ideal for public or commercial settings where the toilet is used by guests, tourists, or other first-time users. In these cases, misuse can reduce the effectiveness of the system and may even lead to unpleasant maintenance issues.

In short: A UD toilet is an excellent choice for maximizing capacity in private or family use, but for guest or public access composting toilets, a standard non-diverting model may be more practical and user-friendly.

Green Toilet 100 Easy – Estimated Daily Capacity

The Green Toilet 100 Easy is a compact and user-friendly batch composting toilet with a 26-gallon composting container. Its design makes it well-suited for outhouses, cabins, and even indoor use. A spare container is available to expand capacity and simplify servicing.

🔢 Estimated Solid-Waste Capacity per Bin:

Note: Due to the shape and internal structure of the container, the actual composting capacity is slightly lower than its raw volume might suggest, if you compare with Green Toilet 120 Family composting toilet for example.

CF 4 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 4 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 105-gallon container. Unlike batch composting systems (such as the Green Toilet models), the CF 4 is designed for gradual emptying — solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

      This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 4 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container. Depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used, each pile can hold approximately 200–400 poops.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
      30 days (1 month) ~7–13 visits/day
      60 days (2 months) ~3–7 visits/day
      90 days (3 months) ~2–4 visits/day
      180 days (6 months) ~1–2 visits/day
      365 days (1 year) ~0.5–1.1 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 4 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.
