The Green Toilet 120 comes with two special composting bins. The bins are used one at a time underneath the toilet seat, so that all waste simply falls into the bin below. Inside each bin, a special double base separates excess urine from the solid waste — that is, the urine that the compost cannot naturally absorb and evaporate through the system's ventilation. However, if more urine enters the bin than the solids can absorb, the double base at the bottom passes it through tiny holes, so the excess liquid falls to the bottom of the bin.

Installation
The Green Toilet can be installed for many different applications. Probably the most common of these is in a traditional outhouse, where the Green Toilet is placed underneath a flat, bench-like seat.
The Green Toilet composting bin is positioned directly underneath the toilet seat. This setup allows waste to drop vertically into the bin, where it begins composting straight away.
Excess liquid flowing through the double base of the Green Toilet is collected via a hose that drains from the bottom of the bin into a separate canister or trench. Additionally, the top part of the Green Toilet bin is equipped with a ventilation pipe. This pipe extends from the bin and runs up the back wall of the building, exiting above roof level. This ventilation setup is important, as it keeps the system odor-free, making the toilet always pleasant to use for everyone.
For maintenance, all service activities are conveniently carried out outside and the back of the building. This external access ensures that the interior remains clean and in good condition. As a swappable bin system (also known as batch composting), the Green Toilet comes with a spare bin that is swapped in as needed. This ventilation setup is important, as it keeps the system odor-free, making the toilet always pleasant to use for everyone.
For maintenance, all service activities are conveniently carried out outside and the back of the building. This external access ensures that the interior remains clean and in good condition. As a swappable bin system (also known as batch composting), the Green Toilet comes with a spare bin that is swapped in as needed. When one bin fills up, it is replaced with an empty one, allowing continuous use. The full bin is then left to compost further until the compost is ready to be used as fertilizer, for example in gardens.
What happens after the bin in use fills up
The operation and maintenance of the Green Toilet rely on the swappable bin system. This means that once the composting bin of the Green Toilet fills up, it is wheeled out and an empty spare bin is put in place. The filled bin is then sealed with a lid and set aside to decompose until it’s time for the next servicing, eliminating the need for any direct contact with — or shoveling of — raw toilet waste.
By the time the second bin has also filled up (after 3–6 months in family use), the first bin should already be ready for emptying. If the Green Toilet 120 is used full-time every day by several people, consider purchasing additional spare bins, which are available separately. The finished compost can be emptied onto non-edible plants, trees or garden beds as fertilizer. This makes the Green Toilet the most ecological of all toilet types!
Service process in steps:
- Disconnect the ventilation pipe and liquids hose from the Green Toilet bin.
- Pull the full bin out using the wheels supplied.
- Seal the full bin with the closed lid of the spare bin.
- Leave the full bin outside to continue composting, and set the spare bin in use.
- Repeat the process when the other bin is full again (typically after 3–6 months in family use).

2. Can you install the Green Toilet indoors?
Yes, the Green Toilet can be installed indoors, but the installation depends on the building’s structure. For indoor installations, consider the Green Toilet Lux 120 model. The Lux 120 features a stylish porcelain pedestal installed directly above the Green Toilet bin, which is positioned below floor level. If there is no such clearance below the floor level, then in that case you might need to build a seat on top of the Green Toilet bin. You may also consider some of the other composting toilets that can be installed more easily, directly on the floor. See our self-contained toilets.
3. Can you use the Green Toilet in a cold climate? What happens if it freezes?
Yes, the Green Toilet can be used in cold climates. While freezing temperatures will halt the composting process, this does not prevent the toilet from being used. Composting will naturally resume once temperatures rise, typically in the spring or summer. For regions where the climate remains very cold even in summer, it may be necessary to consider options such as extra capacity with spare bins, as the shortened composting period may require additional space. However, the toilet remains functional in freezing temperatures; the composting process will simply take longer to complete due to the cold.
Note: In places like Iceland, Green Toilets are used effectively in public toilets to serve tourists. These examples demonstrate the toilet’s robust performance, even in extremely cold conditions.
4. Should I choose the smaller Green Toilet 120 or the larger Green Toilet 330?
The best choice between the Green Toilet 120 and the Green Toilet 330 depends on your specific usage needs. The Green Toilet 120 is typically used by families for seasonal use, such as in a holiday home, tiny house, or cabin. It is well-suited for smaller families or less frequent usage.
On the other hand, the Green Toilet 330 is designed for larger families (five or more people) or for situations where the composting toilet is used more consistently throughout the year, not just seasonally. This model is often chosen for higher-usage scenarios such as public toilets or year-round residential use.
Should the capacity ever run out, there is always the option to acquire additional spare bins. For public-use composting toilets, it is not uncommon to see three or more spare bins used for a single toilet.
5. How many times can the Green Toilet be used before service?
The manufacturer has run tests of Green Toilets in use, and on average you can use them for “number two” as follows:
- Green Toilet 120 for about 250 times
- Green Toilet 330 for about 800 times
