Green Toilet Lux 330

The Green Toilet Lux is a batch composting toilet designed for indoor use. The toilet features an elegant ceramic toilet pedestal that looks, feels and is used like any regular toilet except that it is not flushed. Thus, there is no need to provide any special instructions for anyone how to use the toilet.

The larger model, Green Toilet Lux 330 model comes with two spacious composting containers (87 gallons each) making the system ideal for holiday cabins, AirBnbs and other rentals, year-round residences as well as for public use sites. In public use, the capacity can easily be extended with additional spare containers sold separately. For more limited occasional family-use, there is also a smaller Green Toilet Lux 120 model available.

The Green Toilet Lux 330 is a split-system composting toilet, which means that the system needs at least 3 feet underfloor space below the ceramic toilet for the composting container. The exact space requirement for the 330 model is 37 inches. If there is not this so much space, you might want to consider for example the GL 90 split-system composting toilet that is similar to Green Toilet Lux models, but requires less space below floor-level. In case there is no clear underfloor space at all below the floor, you may like our self-contained waterless toilets.

The following video is originally made by European manufacturer of the Green Toilet composting toilets.

Here are some of the great advantages of the Green Toilet Lux system.

Totally off-the-grid

The Green Toilet Lux is a waterless composting toilet and therefore it does not use any water. With that said, you can wash the ceramic toilet with a little bit of water and toilet brush to keep it clean.

The Green Toilet Lux system is supplied with low-consumption electric fan to boost the ventilation from the composting unit. The electric fan can be used together with our Solar Power Bank Kit, and supported with a Whirlybird wind-driven ventilator available separately in our selection of accessories. This make the Green Toilet Lux completely off-the-grid composting toilet system.

Elegant Ceramic Toilet

The Green Toilet Lux includes a non-separating ceramic toilet pedestal that brings elegance into any bathroom decor. The waste is handled in a separate composting container beneath the bathroom/restroom space, which ensures high hygiene. There is usually no clear visibility into the waste from above the toilet, because the darkness in the waste pipe conceals most of the view.

No Need for Use Instructions

To use the Green Toilet Lux composting toilet, you do not need to provide instructions for anyone. There is no need to learn to use it. The Green Toilet Lux composting toilet is used just like any regular toilet except that it is not flushed. Thus, no one can unintentionally misuse or damage the toilet. This makes the Green Toilet Lux composting toilet a great choice for short-term rentals like AirBnbs as well as for public and commercial use.

Completely Odorfree

The Green Toilet Lux composting toilet is completely free of odors. The toilet does not smell at all inside or outside. This is largely because the system separates the excess liquid from the solids within the composting unit, preserving optimal carbon-nitrogen balance. The system also features an effective ventilation system to guarantee odorless operation.

Flexible Capacity with Batch Composting

The Green Toilet Lux has great capacity/volume for solid waste. This means that for example in occasional weekend use on average of four people, you might expect to service the system once or max. twice a year. However, if the system is used all year-around every single day or in frequent public/commercial use, then in that case extra capacity might be necessary. Thanks to being a batch composting toilet, the capacity can easily be expanded with additional spare containers. In case you are unsure if the capacity of the basic package is enough for your needs, recommend either consulting us prior to purchasing the system or getting the spare container afterwards should the capacity turn out to fall short.

Simple to Maintain

The Green Toilet Lux is very simple to maintain. By the time the Green Toilet composting container fills up of solid waste after months of use, the full container is pulled out of use, sealed with a closed lid and set aside for further composting process. In the meantime, the other container (supplied) is used. By the time the second container is full too, the first one should already be done with composting, and again the containers switch place.

Durable, Robust and Proven Design

The Green Toilet Lux is a highly robust system. There are hardly any moving parts that could break in use. Thus you can rely that the system works no matter how and who is using it. The Green Toilet composting toilet system was first introduced in Europe in the early 1990s. Today, the system has thousands of happy owns across the world.

Operating Principle

The Green Toilet Lux composting toilet is used just like any regular toilet except that it is not flushed. All waste, including toilet paper, simply falls down through a waste chute into the special composting unit directly below the toilet.

Split-system principle

The Green Toilet features a unique double base that effectively separates excess liquid from the solid compost material. This innovative design allows the composting process to begin right from the moment the toilet is put in to used.

Green Toilet Double Base

The Green Toilet Lux operates on a batch composting principle, supporting the use of one or more spare containers. This means that as one container fills, it’s swapped out for an empty one. The full container is sealed with a closed lid and set aside to decompose into rich, nutritious mulch over a period of 6-12 months, depending on environmental conditions. For convenience, the containers are equipped with wheels, making them easy to transport and manage.

Service

During the use of the toilet, dry material such as hemp or peat is added after every use 1-2 dl. Alternatively, dry material can be added separately 1-2 times a week a larger amount, about 1-2 gallons.

The porcelain pedestal can be washed with little water, a toilet brush and biodegradable detergent, if needed for example once per week. Please note that usually the porcelain pedestal stays clean by itself after use. Rarely there are any marks of use after using the toilet.

Dry Toilet Pedestal can be washed with water

When the Green Toilet container gets full, an empty full container is taken into use. In the attached video, the change of the container is showed. Please note that the service can be done in minutes and no shoveling is needed.

How much space is needed beneath the floor to install the Green Toilet Lux 330?

The Green Toilet Lux 330 requires approximately 3 feet, or specifically 37 inches, of space below the bathroom floor for proper installation.

If you do not have the space, please check out the other split-system composting toilets we have.

How long does it take for the composting containers of the Green Toilet Lux 330 to fill up?

The time it takes for the composting containers to fill up varies depending on the number of users. In a typical family setting, a container usually takes at least six months to become full. Most households find that the standard package, which includes two composting containers, adequately meets their needs.

Does the toilet smell?

No. There is no smell whatsoever coming out from the toilet. All our waterless toilets, including the Green Toilet Lux, are completely odor-free.

Can the Green Toilet Lux 330 be used in freezing conditions during winter?

Yes, the Green Toilet Lux 330 can be used in freezing winter conditions without any issues. While the composting process may pause due to the cold, this does not hinder the toilet’s usability.

What does the compost look like after it is emptied?

I recently installed a family 120. Works well so far. I was planning a split system that I didn't think was manufactured and found this shop and it fit perfectly! Hallelujah! Saved me a bunch of time. I added an extra air tube in the corners from a section of drain pipe with the holes to help keep the compost aerobic.

Composting toilet for off-grid cabin works well! After a great deal of research, I decided on the Green Toilet Lux 120 Composting toilet for my off grid cabin. The fact that I could install a replaceable bin under the cabin's "in-house" toilet area was fantastic. The porcelain toilet is a perfect amenity - although I had to find a toilet seat to replace the one that was sent (cracked in shipping - but WTS reimbursed me to cover the costs). A rubber boot on the roof helps to keep rain out of the structure. The wind-driven fan works really well and helps keep the area ventilated. I keep a bucket full of wood mulch in the toilet area and drop 1 to 3 scoops after each use. I found some biodegradable detergent from Dr. Bronners that I mixed with water to spray down the toilet for cleaning at the end of our weekend visit. I also upgraded the provided vent pipe to a 4" pipe. Having a usable composting toilet in the winter makes our cabin so much more habitable. Thanks for making this product availalbe!

Easy set up and GREAT customer service! The Green Lux toilet arrived and was very easy to set up. We built an elevated outhouse to make storage of the containers easy. We hosted a large gathering of 100+ people, and had several tell us that it was the most luxurious outhouse they have ever been in! Also, when the fan went out and the seat got cracked, they didn’t even ask questions, and simply sent us new ones! We will 100% be returning customers!

Arrived quick! The seat itself (not the pedestal which seems the more likely) was cracked on arrival. It was a bummer but the customer service is on point, sent not one but TWO replacements because the first redo was cracked too! Crazy. Anyway.. Gorgeous throne, 5/5 will poop again.

CF 8 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 8 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 250-gallon container. Like the CF 4, it is designed for gradual emptying rather than batch-style use. Solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 8 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container.

Because the CF 8 is more than twice as large as the CF 4, each pile can hold approximately 480–960 poops, depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~17–32 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~8–16 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~5–11 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~3–5 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~1.2–2.6 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one-third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 8 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.

Full-tank capacity estimate: ~1,440–2,880 poops

Example: 120 days of use (approx. 4 months):
→ ~12–24 solid visits per day on average

⚠️ Disclaimer

These numbers are rough estimates based on typical use and conditions. Actual capacity will vary depending on:

For best performance, ensure proper aeration, regular bulking material use, and consistent emptying of composted portions.

💡 Want to Maximize Capacity? Consider a Urine-Diverting Toilet — With Some Important Considerations

upgrade to a urine diverting toilet pedestal

If you’re looking to maximize the capacity of the CF 8 system — aiming for 960+ poops per composting “pile” — we recommend using a urine-diverting (UD) toilet pedestal.

✅ Benefits of Urine Separation:

By diverting urine out of the solids container, the volume taken up by absorbent material (like peat or wood shavings) is significantly reduced. This can make a big difference in how often the system needs to be emptied.

⚠️ Downsides to Consider:

Urine-diverting toilets can take some time to get used to. Users need to sit or aim correctly to ensure proper separation, which might not happen consistently without experience or guidance.

For this reason, UD toilets are generally not ideal for public or commercial settings where the toilet is used by guests, tourists, or other first-time users. In these cases, misuse can reduce the effectiveness of the system and may even lead to unpleasant maintenance issues.

In short: A UD toilet is an excellent choice for maximizing capacity in private or family use, but for guest or public access composting toilets, a standard non-diverting model may be more practical and user-friendly.

CF 4 Composting Toilet – Estimated Daily Capacity

The CF 4 is a continuous composting toilet system featuring a single large 105-gallon container. Unlike batch composting systems (such as the Green Toilet models), the CF 4 is designed for gradual emptying — solids are typically removed in thirds or sections, allowing earlier deposits time to fully compost inside the tank.

This setup allows for either:

🔁 Continuous Use: Gradual Emptying in Thirds

When used year-round, the CF 4 is typically emptied one-third at a time, effectively composting in three rotating “piles” within the container. Depending on composting conditions and how much bulking material is used, each pile can hold approximately 200–400 poops.

Service Interval (per pile) Estimated #2 Visits per Day
30 days (1 month) ~7–13 visits/day
60 days (2 months) ~3–7 visits/day
90 days (3 months) ~2–4 visits/day
180 days (6 months) ~1–2 visits/day
365 days (1 year) ~0.5–1.1 visits/day

💡 These figures assume that one third of the tank is in active use at a time, with older waste given time to compost before removal.

🌤 Seasonal Use: Full-Tank Emptying After Inactive Period

For cabins, cottages, or other sites used seasonally, the CF 4 can be used for a few months and then left idle to allow full composting. In such cases, the entire tank may be emptied once a year.
