CF 4

Introducing the CF 4, the ideal continuous composting system for small to medium applications, especially designed for tiny homes and weekend getaways. This system stands out for being the market's top value continuous composting solution, boasting a waterless, odorless, and hygienic process without the use of chemicals.

The CF 4 is designed to service 1-4 people full-time, facilitating around 16 daily visits or approximately 5,840 visits annually.

The CF 4 split-system toilet features a stylish porcelain pedestal in the bathroom. It connects to a composting container located below floor level. When full, you simply swap the container with a spare one. This design is perfect for houses with limited space beneath the toilet.

What is a continuous composting toilet?

*A continuous composting toilet is a type of toilet that processes waste through natural composting process ongoing within a single container. Unlike batch systems, which require swapping out full containers for empty ones, a continuous system adds new waste on top of older waste decomposing at the bottom. This design allows for the removal of composted material from one end (usually the bottom or front of the composting unit/container) while fresh waste is added from the top.

In uninterrupted year-around use, a continuous composting toilet is not intended to be emptied completely all at once, because in that case there is raw waste on top of the compost pile. However, in seasonal use, for example if the toilet is only used in the summer time, the under-the-floor composting unit can be fully emptied all at once e.g. in the spring before the next season.

CF 4 is one of the two continuous composting toilets we have at the Waterless Toilet Shop. There is also a larger CF 8 continuous composting toilet available.

Use of CF 4 toilet

The CF composting toilet is used just like a regular toilet, except that it is not flushed. All waste, including toilet paper, simply falls through the toilet pedestal to the below-floor composting unit. Because there is darkness inside the composting unit, there is no clear visibility to the waste from the toilet.

Within the composting unit, a portion of the liquids get absorbed into the solid compost mass, while the rest of the liquids are drained out from the bottom of the unit. This design keeps the compost odorless and perfectly moist for natural composting process. To secure that the toilet stays odorless at all times, the ventilation is often enhanced with an electric duct fan or wind-powered Whirlybird (depending if there is electricity available or not).

For improved compost quality, we highly recommend adding organic bulking agent such as hemp or peat into the compost tiny amount (a cup) after every use or once a week a greater amount. When you purchase the CF 4 composting toilet (or any of our many composting toilets) the package comes with a bale of hemp so that you are able to take the toilet into use straight away.

Capacity

The CF 4 composting toilet is designed for approximately 2-4 people full-time, year-around use, facilitating around 16 daily visits or approximately 5,840 visits annually. Please note that, because the under-the-floor composting unit separates the liquids from the solids, peeing does not fill up the the unit and therefore should not be counted as a use when estimating the capacity needs.

With less frequent, seasonal use, the CF 4 can accommodate up to 8 people using the toilet during a day.

Installation of CF 4

CF composting toilets are continuous composting toilets, meaning there is a single composting unit installed underneath the toilet floor level where all the “magic” happens – that is organic breakdown of matter through natural composting process resulting in a reusable humus / compost.

The below-floor composting unit is connected to the floor level toilet pedestal with a waste shaft included in the package. You will need to make a hole through you toilet floor and the black composting container for the waste shaft to go through. The CF 4 composting unit does not have a ready made hole because different customers prefer to have it in different position. For more information, please refer to the CF 4 Installation and user manual.pdf

The CF composting container can be installed either completely on ground level or buried half in to ground. Burying is a great option for spaces with limited height clearance under the toilet floor. Half-buried, the CF 4 only requires 13 inches of underfloor clearance. If the container can not be buried, the height requirement is 29 inches.

The vent pipe from the composting unit is usually mounted outside or inside of the back wall as shown in the image below.

How CF composting toilet is serviced

The CF composting toilets are emptied through a hatch by using a shovel. The composting unit is so large in size that the solid material should be fully composted once it reaches the end of the composting container where the hatch is. We recommend that you service the CF composting toilet 1-3 times a year, depending on the use. Each time, you move the solid waste within the composting unit a little towards the emptying end of the container, shoveling some of the solids out, so that there is always space in front of the container.

Emptying the CF composting toilet might initially sounds daunting/nasty, but rest assured the process of servicing the toilet is not bad at all. The solid compost within the system does not smell because the liquids are effectively separated from the solids, keeping the toilet odorless.

1. Does the toilet smell?

No, the CF 4 composting toilet, like all our toilets, is designed to remain odorless at all times. The CF 4 drains out excess liquids from the composting unit effectively keeping it odorless at all times. Additionally, the toilet is equipped with an electric duct fan to secure effective ventilation from the composting unit. For installations without electricity, we recommend a wind-powered Whirlybird and/or Solar Panel Fan to boost the ventilation.

2. Can you install the CF 4 indoors?

Yes! However, you do need a minimum of 13 inches clear space below your toilet floor level for the under-the-floor composting unit, assuming you can half bury it. If you are unable to bury the system, then you need at least 26 inches below the floor.

CF installation on ground or half buried

3. Can you use the CF toilet in a cold climate? What happens if it freezes?

Yes, technically you can use the CF 4 in cold climate. The only real issue comes if the compost inside the CF 4 is frozen and it fills up in use, because then you may not be able to empty the frozen mass from the composting unit. If you are sure that the toilet will not be used when it’s cold, then there is no issue in having the CF 4, because The composting will naturally resume once temperatures rise in the spring/summer.

For regions where the climate remains cold for the most of the year (e.g. northern parts of Canada), it maybe wise to consider some of our batch composting toilets that can have multiple composting containers and hence extended capacity.

4. Should I choose the smaller CF 4 or the larger CF 8?

The best choice between the CF 4 and the CF 8 depends on your specific usage needs. The CF 4 is typically used by families for seasonal use, such as in holiday homes, tiny houses, and cabins. It is well-suited for smaller families or less frequent usage.

On the other hand, the CF 8 is designed for larger families (five or more people) and for situations where the composting toilet is used more consistently throughout the year by many people. This model is often chosen for higher usage scenarios such as in public toilets or for year-round residential use.

5. How often would I have to service the toilet?

Apart from everyday cleanup, you may expect to have to service the CF 4 composting toilet 1-5 times a year, a lot depending on the amount of use. If it is the only toilet for 4 full-time users, then you may expect to have to service it 4-5 times a year. If there are “just the two of you” using the toilet every now and then, you may expect to have service it 1-3 times a year.

Exact numbers vary depending on the climate and use case, but clearly the CF toilets have high capacity offering long service intervals compared to many other smaller waterless toilets.

6. How and where can I order the toilet?

You can place an order for your composting toilet through our online shop or simply email us at info@waterlesstoiletshop.com. Once your order is placed, the toilet will be delivered to your chosen delivery address. Delivery times vary depending on your location in the United States: typically, it takes 2 to 8 days. Orders from the Western coast may arrive faster due to our warehouse being located in Nevada. Deliveries to the Eastern coast generally take longer. After placing your order, you will receive a tracking code, allowing you to trace your shipment every step of the way.

If you prefer not to order through the web shop, you are always welcome to contact us directly and your order can be handled manually.

      ABC of Composting Toilets

      cf brothers

Two Sizes: CF 4 and CF 8

We offer two models of CF composting toilets: the smaller CF 4 and the larger CF 8.

Both models share the same features, with the main difference being their capacity.

The CF 4 has an approximate volume of 105 gallons, making it suitable for 1-4 users. It’s an excellent choice for weekenders, tiny homes, small cabins, or limited residential use. The CF 4 is ideal for smaller spaces where a low-profile solution is needed.

The CF 8, with a volume of around 250 gallons, can accommodate up to 6 full-time users or 12 part-time users. This larger model is also suitable for public spaces, with an estimated capacity of 24 visits (only solid waste is counted, as urine is separated and does not impact the composting unit’s volume).

      cf false floor mosaic

      Separation of liquid

One of the most important features of the CF continuous composting toilets is the false floor within the composting unit. All waste lands on the false floor. Most of the urine will get absorbed into the solid compost and evaporate through the ventilation of the composting unit.

If the amount of urine exceeds what the solid material can absorb, the excess liquid passes through the false floor and collects at the bottom of the unit. From there, it is drained through a pipe and can either be directed to a separate tank or a trench, depending on local regulations.

One of the key features of any composting toilet is effective separation of liquids from solids. With proper separation, the composting process works efficiently, ensuring that solid waste stays at the ideal moisture level for natural decomposition. This prevents the production of ammonia and helps maintain a pleasant, odor-free environment—addressing one of the main concerns people often have.

cf 4 is emptied through hatch

      Emptied through hatch

The CF composting toilets are emptied gradually through a hatch on one end of the composting unit. The emptying is done using a shovel or digging fork. The CF composting toilet are continuous composting toilets which means that the composting unit is not intended to be emptied all at once, unless the toilet has been out of use for months.

The CF composting toilets handle waste through an ongoing composting process in a single container. Unlike batch systems, where full containers are replaced with empty ones, continuous systems allow new waste to be added on top while the older waste composts at the bottom. This design makes it easy to remove the finished compost from one end as fresh waste falls in to the front.

      CF 8-continuous-composting-toilet-installation-principle-partially-buried

      Option to partially bury

The CF composting units can be partially buried below ground level, reducing the amount of clear space needed beneath the bathroom floor. The ability to bury the unit depends on the local ground conditions. When half-buried, the CF 4 requires only 13 inches of underfloor clearance. If burying the unit isn’t possible, the height requirement increases to 29 inches.
