Definition

Self-contained waterless toilets are type of waterless toilets that collect (some also compost) waste within a single system that you sit directly on to do your thing. These waterless toilets contain the waste within the toilet itself. In other words, there is no external composting unit under the floor level whatsoever.

Truth About Composting Toilets: Not All Waterless Options Complete the Cycle

It is worth noting that not all waterless toilets are true composting toilets. Many commercial waterless toilet manufacturers intentionally misuse the term “composting toilet” when advertising for example urine-diverting waterless toilets. Different Types of Self-Contained Waterless Toilets

Self-contained waterless toilets can be divided into five or six different categories:

  • Self-contained urine-diverting toilets
  • Self-contained batch composting toilets
  • Self-contained continuous composting toilets
  • Freezing toilets*
  • Incinerating toilets*
  • Porta potties/Night chambers*

What unites these different types of self-contained waterless toilets is that they are all:

  • Installed directly on floor level,
  • None of them use water,
  • You can sit directly on the toilet without a separate pedestal/seat (unlike with split-system composting toilets)

*At Waterless Toilet Shop, we do have carry freezing or incinerating toilets in selection, nor do we have any porta potties or night chambers.
