The taller you can go, the longer between services, so we recommend keeping the full 20.5 in height whenever your space allows it. For households that need more capacity, additional bins can be added to the same system.

Composting naturally slows in freezing weather and can pause entirely through a hard winter — that doesn't stop the toilet from working, it simply means the bin's contents will resume breaking down once things thaw. The bin's matte black finish helps it absorb heat, and in colder regions we recommend setting a frozen bin out in the sun come spring to help it along. In climates with real winters, plan on a full summer season of composting before a bin is finished; in warmer climates, it happens faster.

You don’t have to add cover material after every single use, either — some households add it a bit more generously once a week instead. Which approach makes sense depends on who’s using it: in a family, it’s easy for everyone to add their own scoop each time; for guests who may not be familiar with the system, it can be simpler for the owner to top up with extra cover material once a week rather than relying on every visitor to do it themselves.
Regular toilet paper goes straight into the bin along with everything else — no problem there. Feminine hygiene products should go in a separate trash bin instead, since they often contain plastic that won’t compost. A vent pipe carries air out of the bin, and can exit either from the side of the bin or from the top of its lid, whichever suits your building and the space available. The electric fan is installed inline on the vent pipe: cut the pipe and fit the fan in as a coupling between the two sections. It can be mounted indoors or outdoors. For off-grid installations without electricity, the fan can run from a Solar Power Bank Kit, and a wind-driven Whirlybird ventilator keeps air moving on windy days.
How It’s Serviced

It looks clean, feels solid, and behaves like the toilet everyone already knows how to use — which matters for guests, kids, partners, and anyone trying a waterless toilet for the first time. With the standard, non-diverting seat especially, there’s really no wrong way to use it, and no special instructions to hand out. That familiarity comes with genuine durability, too: it’s not something that gets damaged by ordinary, everyday use.
The two-level design pays off here as well. Inside the bathroom, all you see is the porcelain toilet itself — compact, good-looking, and taking up barely any floor space. And if you need more, capacity scales easily. Additional swap bins are available separately, so a larger household — say, a family of four using a cabin part-time year-round — can simply add more bins to the rotation. Each full bin still gets to compost undisturbed for as long as it needs before it’s emptied. Our usual recommendation is to start with the base package and add bins later if you find you need them, though buying extras upfront is a good way to save on shipping if you already know a bigger household is using it — some customers start right out with four bins in place.
Fully Odorless, By Design
Odor control comes down to two things working together: the base plate’s liquid management, and the constant airflow from the vent. Together, they make this a genuinely, completely odorless toilet — nothing escapes into the bathroom. It’s also a reliable system: if the fan ever fails, or the power goes out, the toilet is still perfectly usable, and it won’t immediately start smelling. That reliability comes largely from the base plate itself, which keeps managing liquid and airflow even without the fan running.
No Electricity? No Problem!
If electricity is not available, we recommend our Solar Power Bank Kit and Whirlybird as accessories for your off-grid composting toilet system. The Green Toilet Compact Lux is equipped with a 12 V DC ventilation fan (AC adapter included), which can be powered by the Solar Power Bank Kit for up to 24 hours without sunlight.
