Five things that make it a real outhouse.
Solid wood, not sheet cladding on a light frame.
Walls, roof and interior are ¾ in (20 mm) solid Finnish spruce all the way through. It is the biggest difference you can feel with your hand.

The outhouse and the toilet are designed for each other.
The bench seat, the opening at the back and the height all exist because of the Green Toilet 330. The Finnish Outhouse is pleasant to use and easy to service.

Real ease. Swap, don't shovel.
The Green Toilet system was first designed in Finland in the early 1990s. When a container is full, it rolls out through the opening at the back on its own wheels. You close it with its lid and set it aside to finish composting, and the empty spare goes in.

No smell inside.
Liquid separation and steady ventilation keep the Green Toilet 330 odor-free, so the outhouse is pleasant to use. Guests need no instructions: they use it like any toilet.

Delivered flat-packed.
Finished wall, roof and floor elements arrive on a pallet. Two people with standard hand tools put it together on flat, compacted ground. Paint or stain it as soon as it is up.

Nicer on day one. Much nicer on day 1,000.
Most outhouses are one of three things: a shack over a pit or concrete vault, a plastic portable toilet, or something you build yourself. Each comes with a catch: the hole in the ground, the pump truck, or the weekends it takes. The Finnish Outhouse is solid Finnish wood around a toilet you swap instead of pump, odor-free by design, with a proper bench and windows to the outside. A place people actually like to go, year after year.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pit or vault toilet | Plastic portable toilet | Build your own | ||
| Smell | Odor-free. Liquid separation and a wind-driven vent keep the air fresh.4 | Waste collects in an open pit or vault under the seat. Smell and flies in warm weather. | Chemicals and everyone's waste in an open tank under the seat, baking in the sun. | Only as good as your ventilation design. |
| Looks | Finnish design in ¾ in (20 mm) solid spruce. A small building you are proud to have by your cabin. | A shack over a hole, or a concrete park restroom. | A construction-site toilet. | Homemade. As good as your carpentry. |
| Inside | Solid wood all around, a proper bench seat, daylight through two windows. | A seat over a hole. | A plastic seat over a tank, in a plastic box. | Whatever you manage to build in. |
| Emptying | Roll the full container out, roll the spare in. Clean and quick, no pump truck. | A full pit is covered and a new one dug. A vault is pumped by a truck. | A pump truck, every time it is full. | Depends on the toilet you put inside. |
| Over the years | Solid wood, built for year-round outdoor use. Paint it to match your cabin. | Often needs a county permit, and a pit must keep its distance from wells and water. | The plastic fades and gets brittle in the sun, and the light shell has to be staked down against the wind. | As good as your build. |
| Your time | Two people, usually 2–4 hours.1 | Digging a pit, or excavating and setting a concrete vault, then a building on top. | None. It comes on a truck. | Designing, buying, cutting and building: 40–60 hours, often more. |
| Up front | $6,490 complete. Freight usually $400–800. | A pit: cheap to dig, plus the building. A concrete vault: excavation, a crane and a contractor. | About $900–1,600 to buy, or $125–300 a month to rent. | About $3,500–4,500 for lumber, roofing, hardware, paint and a Green Toilet 330 package. |
| What you own | A real outhouse, designed and made in Finland. | A hole in the ground that slowly fills. | If rented: nothing. A year of rent is a third to half of a Finnish Outhouse. | Your own build, when it is finished. |
Portable toilet: US retail and rental prices, October 2026. Build your own: our estimate for the same size with the Green Toilet 330 package ($1,595).

From one to as many as you need.
A family cabin is the natural home for a Finnish Outhouse. And it scales without fuss to a business or a public site, not only by adding outhouses but, above all, by adding Green Toilet containers. Every extra container is more capacity, so a single outhouse can serve many more people. When one is full you swap in the next, and the full ones keep composting until you are ready to empty them.
- Bulk pricing on request
- Additional spare containers available
- Finish the outhouses to match your site

Not sure an outhouse is the right fit?
Indoors or out, a few people or many: answer a few questions and we will show the toilets that fit.
What buyers ask first.
How is it different from a traditional outhouse?
A traditional outhouse sits over a pit, so waste collects in the ground and the smell rises through the seat. The Finnish Outhouse stands on a base above the ground with the Green Toilet 330 inside. Waste goes into a container that you roll out, close and set aside to compost, and a vent draws the air out above the roof. There is no pit to dig.
Will it smell?
No. The toilet is ventilated through a 4 in pipe and a Whirlybird ventilator, so the outhouse stays odor-free when it is used as the manual says.
Will it last outside?
Yes. The outhouse is ¾ in (20 mm) solid wood on a pressure-treated base, designed and made in Finland.
How hard is it to put up?
It arrives flat-packed as finished wall, roof and floor elements on a pallet. Two people with standard hand tools put it together on flat, compacted ground. Assembly usually takes 2–4 hours. No concrete, no plumbing, no wiring.
How often do I empty it?
It depends on how many people use it. When a container is full, swap it for the empty one and set the full one aside to compost. No tools needed. Extra containers can be added at any time.
What does it cost?
$6,490 for the complete set. Freight is quoted separately to your ZIP code and usually runs $400–800, depending on where it ships.
How soon can I have it?
The Finnish Outhouse is on pre-order now. The first sets ship from mid-January 2027, and delivery takes about 1–2 weeks from shipping. The set ships flat-packed on a pallet, by truck freight to your address.

Notes
- Set-up time. The outhouse arrives as finished wall, roof and floor elements on a pallet, and the base is a kit. Two people with standard hand tools can usually put it together in 2–4 hours. The time depends on your experience and your site, and it does not include preparing the ground or painting or staining the wood. ↩
- Where it stands. The base needs level, compacted ground, for example a gravel bed. It is pressure-treated Finnish pine and lifts the outhouse off the ground, out of standing water and snow. ↩
- Time between swaps. Each container holds 87 gal (330 L). How long one lasts depends on how many people use the toilet and how often, so a cabin or part-time home can go up to a year before a container is full, and heavier use fills it sooner. When one container is full you swap it for the spare, and the full one keeps composting. Additional spare containers are available separately for increased capacity. ↩
- Odor-free. The toilet is ventilated: a 4 in vent pipe leads from the toilet up above the roof, and the Whirlybird wind ventilator draws air through it without power. It stays odor-free when it is installed and used according to the manual included. ↩
- What the price covers. The price is for the complete set listed above: the outhouse, the base and steps, the Green Toilet 330 with its spare container, the Whirlybird ventilator and vent pipe, the fixings and the manuals. It does not include freight, which is quoted to your ZIP code, nor paint or stain. The wood should be painted or stained as soon as the outhouse is up. ↩
