Use of Oz-e-Pod

The Oz-e-Pod composting toilet is used similarly to a traditional flush toilet, with the exception that it is not flushed. All waste, including toilet paper, is deposited into a single compost bin within the Oz-e-Pod, where it composts into humus and mulch. However, it’s important to remember that items containing plastic, such as sanitary towels, must be disposed of in a separate waste bin since they are not suitable for composting.

One of the neat features of the Oz-e-Pod is the view screen. The view screen conceals the waste from direct view above. The view screen is operated by hand before and after each use of the toilet.

After every solid deposit, it is recommended to scatter a cup of covering material, such as hemp shavings or peat, over the waste via the toilet seat. This practice improves the quality of the compost. When placing an order for a new Oz-e-Pod composting toilet, do not forget to take advantage of shipping and add some extra hemp covering material into your order.

Installation of the Oz-e-Pod

The Oz-e-Pod composting toilet is designed for easy installation directly on the bathroom floor, requiring an area of approximately 26 x 20 inches (please refer to the other tab for precise dimensions).

The vent pipe installation

This toilet features a ventilation pipe located at the back, which needs to be routed outside the bathroom. Typically, this involves drilling a hole through the back wall of the bathroom to accommodate the 3-inch vent pipe.

If drilling through the back wall is not feasible, you have the option to reroute the ventilation pipe to the side of the Oz-e-Pod. To do this, you would need to drill a new vent hole on the desired side and seal the pre-existing rear vent outlet.

The liquid drainage pipe installation

The Oz-e-Pod composting toilet separates excess liquid from the solids within the black composting bin. The excess liquid (= liquid that has not been absorbed into the solid compost mass) drains out from the back of the Oz-e-Pod through a flexible drainage pipe.

When installing the Oz-e-Pod, you need to make a hole for the drainage pipe through your bathroom wall or floor so that liquid flows out naturally.

The liquid waste can be collected for example into a jerry can or filtered through non-edible plants and trees that can use the nutrients in the liquid. Please make sure to check your local regulations regarding the use of compost and liquid waste from the composting toilet.

Service of Oz-e-Pod

The Oz-e-Pod is serviced by a standard procedure involving carrying the inner composting bin out of the house and replacing it with an empty spare bin. This is the swappable bin system (also known as batch composting) in action: the full bin is sealed with the closed lid and set aside to continue composting, while the empty bin takes its place in use. By the time the second bin fills up, the compost in the first one is ready.

Does the Oz-e-Pod smell?

No — set up correctly, an Oz-e-Pod smells less than the flush toilet you’re used to. The composting bin’s design separates excess liquid from the solid waste through small holes at the bottom, keeping the solids dry enough to compost properly, while the fan draws air continuously out and away. As with any waterless toilet, the few things that can cause odor — a switched-off fan, a blocked vent, or a blocked liquid hose — are easily avoided and easily fixed.

Can I use it indoors, or only in an outbuilding?

Both. The Oz-e-Pod is fully self-contained and sits directly on the bathroom floor — no space below the floor is needed — which makes it just as suitable for an indoor bathroom, ADU, or tiny home as it is for a cabin or outhouse.

Is it comfortable for family and guests to use?

Yes. The Oz-e-Pod looks and feels like a regular flush toilet, so there’s no awkward technique for kids, older relatives, or guests to learn — it’s one of the reasons it’s a popular choice for cabins the whole family actually wants to visit.

Do I need the second compost bin, or can I add more later?

The standard package already includes two bins, which is what makes it a swappable bin system from day one. If your household grows or you move to full-time use, you can add a third (or more) compost bin at any time — each additional bin extends the comfortable capacity by roughly one more person’s worth of part-time use.

Can I use it in a cold climate? What happens if it freezes?

Yes. Freezing temperatures pause the composting process but don’t stop you from using the toilet — composting simply resumes once temperatures rise again. In very cold regions with a short composting season, an extra spare bin gives you the buffer capacity to cover it.

Is the Oz-e-Pod NSF certified? Do I need a permit?

None of our composting toilets — including the Oz-e-Pod — currently hold NSF 41 certification; the certification process is long and expensive. The Oz-e-Pod has instead been independently tested and certified in Australia to AS/NZS 1546.2:2008 (download certificate), which covers the same core requirements as NSF 41. How much power does the fan use — is it loud?

The included 12V DC fan is low-power and quiet enough that most owners stop noticing it’s running. It’s light enough to power from the Solar Power Bank Kit for a fully off-grid setup.
