Green Toilet 120 Family Package
The Green Toilet 120 Family composting toilet is an innovative, eco-friendly composting toilet, made in Finland, designed to function seamlessly without water or electricity. This makes it a tremendous choice for locations devoid of conventional plumbing or electrical services. Green Toilet has been developed already in the early 90´s and since then it has proven to be the reliable, long-lasting and easy to service waterless toilet for thousands of happy cottage owners.
Service Protocol
Servicing the Green Toilet is based on batch composting -idea. There is one composting container in active use in the toilet and when it becomes full, it is replaced with a spare container. The active container can be unfastened from ventilation and liquid hose without any tools and with the help of sturdy wheels, pulled out. The full container is then covered with the closed lid and the spare composting container is taken into use. This service takes no more than 15 minutes and the use of the toilet can continue! There is no need to shovel or handle any raw toilet waste at any point. The full container can decompose as it is until it is time for the next change of the composting containers. Easy, safe and fast!
Key Benefits
Easy service – No shoveling of raw waste:
The Green Toilet is easy to service with the use of spare container(s). There is no need to shovel raw toilet waste. Simply roll the container out, replace it with an empty spare, and leave the full container out for further composting.
Efficient Composting
The Green Toilet has a double base structure with capillary pillars that optimize the moisture balance inside the container preventing the compost being too wet nor too dry.
Durability and Reliability
Green Toilets are made for longevity. There are no moving parts that could easily break in use. It is difficult to break the system even in public use. We provide 10 year warranty for most components of the product.
Intuitive and user-friendly
The use of the Green Toilet is easy and intuitive, as it is used just as a normal water toilet, except that it is not flushed. Therefore special use instructions are not needed making the system well suitable also for guests and public use.
Handy size that is easy to move around
The size of the Green Toilet 120 Family is optimal for many use cases. The container is not too heavy to move around even when it is nearly full, yet the capacity is brilliant for families and seasonal use. The volume of the Green Toilet 120 is about 31-gallons (120-liters). We estimate that the system is best suitable for 3-5 people part time seasonal use, 1-2 people full time constant use.
Extendable Capacity
The system can handle seasonal family use effortlessly with the included spare container. Should the capacity ever fall short, it is easy to extend by purchasing an extra additional spare container.
Common Uses
Ideal for family usage in holiday homes, cottages, both indoor and traditional outhouses, the Green Toilet 120 accommodates 4-6 people in seasonal use, with usually one spare container sufficing. Additional containers are available for continuous or larger scale use.
This comprehensive system provides a sustainable, low-impact solution for waste management, emphasizing ease of use, environmental friendliness, and adaptability to various living situations.
Operating Principle
At the core of the Green Toilet’s design is its double base design that separates excess urine from solid waste, ensuring an odor-free and pleasant user experience. The system has capillary pillars mimicking underwatering flower pots by reabsorbing some urine into the solid waste, significantly accelerating the composting process while maintaining optimal moisture balance. Excess liquids are efficiently diverted and led to a canister via a hose.
Maintenance is based on batch composting: a full container is simply wheeled out and replaced with a spare, eliminating direct contact with waste. The sealed container is then left out to compost, requiring no manual shoveling.
Another critical component is the ventilation system, which directs airflow outward from the seat and container, preventing any odors from entering the space and enhancing liquid evaporation, particularly in warm weather conditions.
Installation
The Green Toilet, suitable for both traditional outhouses and indoor applications, features a straightforward installation process designed to ensure user comfort and ease of maintenance. The Green Toilet composting container is positioned directly beneath, typically, a flat bench-style seat. This setup allows waste to drop vertically into the container where it begins composting straight away.
Excess liquids flowing through the double base of the Green Toilet are collected via a hose that drains from the bottom of the container into a separate canister. This helps in keeping the system efficient and hygienic. Additionally, the top part of the Green Toilet container is equipped with a ventilation pipe. This pipe extends from the container and runs up the back wall of the outhouse or structure, exiting above the roof level. This ventilation setup is important as it helps to minimize odors, making the toilet always pleasant to use.
For maintenance, all service activities are conveniently conducted outside the structure. This external access ensures that the interior remains clean and in good condition. As a batch composting toilet, the Green Toilet comes with a spare container that are swapped in as needed. When one container fills up, it is replaced with an empty one, allowing continuous use. The full container is then left to compost further until the compost is ready to be utilized as fertilizer, for example in gardens.
This installation design not only provides continuous and efficient operation but also ensures that the Green Toilet is user-friendly and low maintenance.

1. Does the toilet smell?
No, the Green Toilet 120 Family Package is designed to remain odorless at all times. It features a double base design that effectively separates urine from solid waste. This separation ensures that liquid waste flows away, while solid waste remains on the top layer. This separation is crucial for the composting process and helps prevent any odors. Additionally, the toilet is equipped with an effective ventilation system that reinforces its ability to stay odourless at all times.
2. Can you install the Green Toilet indoors?
Yes, the Green Toilet can be installed indoors, but the installation depends on the building’s structure. For indoor installations, consider the Green Toilet Lux 120 model. The Lux 120 features a stylish porcelain pedestal installed directly above the Green Toilet container, which is positioned below floor level. If there is no such clearance below the floor-level, then it that case you might need to build a seat on top of the Green Toilet container. You may also consider some of the other composting toilets that can be installed more easily directly on floor. See our Self-contained toilets.
3. Can you use the Green Toilet in a cold climate? What happens if it freezes?
Yes, the Green Toilet can be used in cold climates. While freezing temperatures will halt the composting process, this does not prevent the toilet from being used. The composting will naturally resume once temperatures rise, typically in the spring or summer. For regions where the climate remains very cold even in summer, it may be necessary to consider options such as extra capacity with spare containers, as the shortened composting period may require additional space. However, the toilet remains functional in freezing temperatures; the composting process will simply take longer to complete due to the cold.
Note: In places like Iceland, Green Toilets are used effectively in public toilets to serve tourists. These examples demonstrate the toilet’s robust performance, even in extremely cold conditions.
4. Should I choose the smaller Green Toilet 120 or the larger Green Toilet 330?
The best choice between the Green Toilet 120 and the Green Toilet 330 depends on your specific usage needs. The Green Toilet 120 is typically used by families for seasonal use, such as in a holiday home, tiny house, or cabin. It is well-suited for smaller families or less frequent usage.
On the other hand, the Green Toilet 330 is designed for larger families (five or more people) or for situations where the composting toilet is used more consistently throughout the year, not just seasonally. This model is often chosen for higher usage scenarios such as in public toilets or for year-round residential use.
Should the capacity ever run out, there is always the option to acquire additional spare containers. In the case of public use composting toilets it is not uncommon to see three or more spare containers to be used for a single toilet.
5. How many times can the Green Toilet be used before service?
The manufacturer has run tests of Green Toilets in use and on average you can use them for the “number two” as follows:
- Green Toilet 120 for about 250 times
- Green Toilet 330 for about 800 times
Exact numbers vary depending on the climate and use case, but clearly the Green Toilets have high capacity and offer long service intervals.
6. What does the compost look like after it is emptied?
7. Where can I order the Green Toilet?
You can place an order for your Green Toilet through our online shop. Once your order is placed, the toilet will be delivered to your chosen delivery address. Delivery times vary depending on your location in the United States: typically, it takes 2 to 8 days. Orders from the Western coast may arrive faster due to our warehouse being located in Nevada. Deliveries to the Eastern coast generally take longer. After placing your order, you will receive a tracking code, allowing you to trace your shipment every step of the way.
If you prefer not to order through the web shop, you are always welcome to contact us directly and your order can be handled manually.
