1. How many people will use it, and how often? #
This is the single biggest factor. A couple at a weekend cabin and a family of five living somewhere full-time have very different needs — not in how the toilet works, but in how much capacity it needs and how often it’ll be emptied. The more people and the more constant the use, the more capacity you’ll want. You don’t need to put a number on it; just knowing “two of us, most weekends” or “a full household, every day” is enough for us to point you the right way. 2. Where will it go? #
A finished cabin, an outhouse, a regular home bathroom, or a guest/rental setup each comes with its own nuances worth considering.
3. Do you have power — and do you want to use it? #
Some models run a small fan that helps with drying and odor control; others are fully passive and need no electricity at all. If you’re on-grid or have even a modest solar setup, a fan-assisted model is usually the more comfortable choice. If you want zero reliance on power, we have models designed for that. 4. What’s underneath the toilet? #
This is the one physical thing worth checking early: whether you have space below the floor — a crawl space or a raised platform — or only a solid floor to build on. Our premium, porcelain-pedestal models typically use that space below for their collection system, so they need it; our standard floor-standing models don’t, and sit happily on any solid floor. A note on premium vs. standard models #
You’ll see our waterless toilets fall into two families, and the difference is easy to feel. Our standard models are floor-standing units — everything is contained within the toilet itself, so they’re simple to place and work on almost any floor. They’re practical, flexible, and a genuinely good choice, especially where there’s no space beneath the floor to work with.
Our premium models pair a true porcelain pedestal — one that looks and sits exactly like a conventional household toilet — with a larger collection system housed neatly below the floor. The result is the most natural, “just like home” experience: a familiar porcelain seat, more capacity so you empty far less often, and the cleanest, most discreet setup, since the working parts sit out of sight beneath you. For anyone with space below the floor, it’s simply the best toilet we make — which is why it’s what nearly everyone in that position chooses.
Here’s the steer: if you have space beneath the floor — a crawl space or a raised platform — the premium toilet is almost always the right choice, and it’s the one nearly all of those customers pick. When the option is on the table, the jump in comfort, capacity, and looks is well worth it. The standard model really comes into its own when building below the floor isn’t possible.
